2012 Iconic Inspiration | d.o.c.s. studio/gallery of contemporary art | New Orleans, LA | May 5 - May 31
The theme of this show is the icon: people and things in my life that have influenced and inspired me spiritually and creatively. My artwork is always representative of my life and an intentional expression of life itself. I create so that I can connect with the viewer. Conversation is at the heart of everything I create. If I spark curiosity inside of the viewer, which then leads to conversation, then I feel like I have been successful as an artist. The irony is that I am usually unaware of the conversation that occurs. The pixel has become the icon that represents my paintings and is the basis of all imagery found on the computer, which is the foundation of my day-to-day existence. Color is the center of my art. I only use the primaries, plus white. I mix every square of color individually. It is a tedious process, but one that is a kin to animation, where, frame by frame, the characters come to life. Similarly, square by square, the paintings are revealed. Painting for me is really about process. It is about finding that quiet space away from everything and taking the time to slow down, to mix just the right color for each and every square. For this show, I have framed my process in addition to my planned paintings, because the process is possibly more authentic as an unintentional expression of life, then that, which was actually planned. After all, thatās what life is anyway.
